IR paan masala 52933 030318
Paan Masala - areca nut (commonly called betel nut or supari) with some other pleasant flavours added. Chewed as a 'breath freshener' but with mild stimulant properties and a whole host of negative health effects, not unlike tobacco. Looks like nutmeg with the marbling pattern.
Can't say I've noticed any stimulant effects myself :-( but when offered it would be rude not to accept! In fact, and with typically Indian generosity verging on compulsion(!), I was given it on numerous occasions, including one where it was coated in a very sweet sugary shell - rather good actually and when in Rome...
Often prepared with betel leaf and some slaked lime and/or tobacco or other things. Loads of people are seen chewing various forms of the stuff and spitting out the characteristic red juice everywhere. It seems since a big anti-smoking drive people have moved onto this instead - I'm not sure this can be considered a public health success.
