31407+31459 St Pancras 1F62 270395
31407 and 31459 at London St. Pancras with 1F62, the 17:20 to Derby. Monday 27th March 1995.
These two worked at least two consecutive (mornings) and nights, providing my last two runs with the venerable 31459 and the last occasions I should have 31s out of the terminus.
They weren't the best of pairs: 31407 was a bit feeble following a CEM that gained it the rather attractive 'Mainline' livery and 459 was plagued with electrical faults after its CEM, although always a strong loco otherwise. 'Loss Of Power' was often reported and on the above run it was OK out of London, then all the diverts dropped out as the third came in getting away from Wellingborough. That pattern was worseningly repeated: after Kettering the diverts dropped out when the second came in and away from Market Harborough after the first, leaving it all but a burbling passenger! A dodgy resistor that didn't like warming up was the most likely the cause.
