TRC MLW 8816 Tabora freight 070908
The 1971 built MLW MX620s (Tanzania) and MX626s (Kenya) for East African Railways were the first to sport the low, wide nose design that was dubbed the 'African Cab' and were given the model suffix 'EA'. The only other African cabs are MX615s in Nigeria and Malawi and, somewhat oddly, some 1975 MX620s in Sri Lanka. Rather handsome looking brutes, I think. 8816 has just brought a freight into Tabora on Sunday 7th September 2008.
During the short-lived reign of RITES/TRL two of these were sent to DMW, Patiala, India for rebuilding and gained high, narrow hoods and an ominous uprating to 2300hp - indicating they'll probably sound relatively crap like other 12-cylinder Indian ALCos! 8801 and 8805 were unveiled at Dar on 31/07/2009, it is not known if they are in use these days, as the 25 year concession was revoked in 2010 amid recriminations over funding and condition of inherited assets. All leaving the Tanzanian people with a massive bill and a worse train service.
