Stonehenge
This famous site has been brilliantly augmented in recent years by English Heritage. The perpendicular road to the A303, which used to pass close to the monument, has been removed and grassed over. A well organised visitor centre has been built out of sight about 2 kilometres away. Access to the henge is by shuttle bus (again hidden from sight), or you can walk. They have sited the rope barriers back from the henge and you have a far better view of it than a couple of decades ago (when I last went).
The consequence of all this is that you can now enjoy the experience much, more than before. There are a lot of visitors, but somehow it doesn't feel crowded. They have done a very effective and thoughtful job of all this.
