As I have researched for Carters HErps Book, I have learned far more than I thought I would. This Mountain Garter Snake we found at Pine Creek ( a unit of the Sacramento Valley National Wildlife Refuge) is indeed a special find. Mountains Garters are rare on the valley floor, in fact only in a specfic part of the Sacramento Valley. To find a member of isolated population is some serious science for a 6 year old girl and a 7 year old just out on the trail with Daddy
