St. Thomas - Paradise Point and Skyride

My excursion for the day was riding the cable car to the top of Paradise Point. It is the highest point on St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, about 700 feet (215 m). The base station is at lower left, by the row of flags. If you look carefully in the larger sizes and have some imagination, you can see the two large pulleys that drive the cable cars. The top station is the light structure at the brow of the hill (not the much larger building below it).

The Skyride, as it is called, has two sets of three cars that balance each other, connected by a continuous cable. They must have been at the top and bottom when I took this photo, since they are not visible here. They meet at the last tower, below the summit of the hill. The cars do not stop at the top and bottom, but travel very slowly through the stations. The transit is 5 minutes, and time through the station is 2 minutes. A complete cycle is 14 minutes.

There are several viewing places at the top. Surprisingly, the best is a balcony behind the shops.

I took this photo from the cruise ship, opposite Havensight Mall. The ride is rather pricey, $21 round trip. There is also a hiking trail and a road to the top.
