Charlotte Amalie and St. Thomas harbor, in a postcard view. The center of the city, with the main tourist shopping area, is at right center. Fort Christian and the Parliament building are on this side of the shops.
Three cruise ships are at the West Indian Company Dock in the foreground, which was the only cruise ship dock until recent. They are (from right) Celebrity Milennium, Freedom of the Seas (Royal Caribbean) and an unidentified Carnival ship. Havensight Mall is the red-roofed buildings in the foregrounds. The two parallel buildings at left center are tourist shops. The rest of the mall is mostly for local residents. A new yacht harbor is at the far right.
Holland America ships dock at the Crown Bay, a new facility. it is at the far left of the photo, with two cruise ships. The shops are not well developed, and probably never will be. There is no view of the harbor, because of the spit of land at the left. I did not see the city from the ship, even as it left the harbor.
The view is from Paradise Point, the top of a hill which has a cable car. The distance between the main cruise ship dock and downtown shops is about 2 miles (3 km). It is a little farther from Crown Bay.
