Paris - Les Halles (1960)
Les Halles, the main wholesale food market in Paris in 1960 - and for centuries before that. The proho may be outside the main building.
We were there in the late morning. Not much was happening. Most of the activity is at night and early morning. Perhaps the basket in the center foreground has fresh white asparagus. Asparagus was in season.
There were places to eat, as you can see from the parts of awnings at the top of the photo. You are supposed to eat onion soup at Les Halles, but we did not.
The location is approximate. You cannot find the buildings now. Les Halles was closed around 1969. The market was demolished, and the area was redeveloped. The market was moved to Rungis, a southern suburb of Paris.
