The champagne bottle does not send the ship down the ways. These men take care of that. They cut ropes and knock blocks out of the way. The man in the center is holding an axe to cut the ropes. About the time I took this photo, someone asked me why I was there. My German was far from perfect then, but I knew enough to say, "Ich bin der Sohn der Taufpatin" (I am the sponsor's son). That was good enough.
