Sphinx
The sphinx represented the divine nature of the king. Lions were believed to be the animals that embody solar power. The king, who was believed to be the son of the sun god Ra, was often depicted in the form of a lion. During the Roman Period, sphinxes were placed near tombs as a symbol of protection.
