Relief fragment from the wall of a mastaba
After its annual flooding, the Nile was rich in fish, which provided the Egyptians with food. This wall relief illustrates a fishing scene, with five men using nets under the direction of a supervisor placed at the centre of the relief. Nets were very common being particularly well suited for marshy areas. Depictions usually showed the last moment in fishing when the men hauled on the cords of the net and drew up the fish.
5th dynasty, Menfi, cemetery / unknown context
