Fragment of a water clock

Fragment of a water clock.

The function of the water clocks was based on water that was poured in to the container and would trickle out from a hole in the bottom. An hour scale was engraved on the inside. The scale made it possible to measure the passing of time - as the water surface descended, it would reach an hour mark at regular intervals.

Ptolemaic period.
