Naqada Period jar
Black topped jar.
This jar moulded from the black clay of the Nile is a typical product of the Predynastic Period. Pottery jars were among the most common everyday objects found in both burial sites and residences. That is why many prehistoric discoveries have been successfully dated based on the various forms and styles of pottery.
This jar originates from the Naqada I or II Period over 5000 years ago. The red colour of the jar emerges when the clay reacts to heat during the firing process. The top of the jar is buried in sand during the firing, which prevents the colour from changing.
