the losing end
Whitetail Deer, Brown County, Wisconsin USA
Of course it is much too early in the season for male Whitetails to lose their antlers - that does not happen until January at the earliest. This young buck lost his in battle with other males in competition for does in the mating season, or rut. There are at least three other large males ranging in the area. Even outside of his lost antler, this male does look a bit battle-worn and forlorn. Tough to be on the losing end, but he will have his day.
