Pelican in Profile

American White Pelican, Fox River at De Pere, Wisconsin USA

An image from April of this year when the Pelicans were on the river in big numbers. This day was my first venture of the year on the river with the floating blind. I rowed about 1/2 mi upriver in my aluminum row boat with the floating blind stowed in the back. Anchored the boat in the shallows about 500 yds away from a large group of pelicans. Offloaded the blind and slowly moved along the bank. An outcrop of cover allowed me to get pretty close. Battled a bit of wind late in the excursion. A memorable outing, though - well worth the considerable effort.

The "horn" on the upper bill is present in both males and females during the mating season. This is the only one of the eight species of pelican to have a bill "horn". The horn is shed after the birds have mated and laid their eggs
