Big sand tiger beetle : Cicindela formosa formosa

Animalia / Arthropoda / Insecta / Pterygota / Neoptera / Exopterygota / Coleoptera / Adephaga / Carabidae / Cicindelinae

Cicindela formosa formosa

A beautiful, large, and very common tiger in open sandy areas of the Great Plains. The eastern subspecies, C. f. generosa, is similar, but blackish in color ( again, goes to show that tigers tend to be more colorful in the west). They are often heard before seen as they fly off with a loud buzzing noise when alarmed.
