A good scratch?

I watched carefully and quietly from the other side of a small pond or mini lake as this grizzly sniffed around this small tree. There appeared to be no small game (or human) up the tree and he almost appeared to be scratching his face on the bark of the tree. I'm told by Glacier National Park Rangers that the Grizzly is not as frequent a climber of trees as are the Black Bear, however, I was warned never to try to climb a tree to escape one, as they can climb if they are so inclined.
