Utakliev View

One to view larger on black.

Breaking my current run of square format images is this one from my Norway trip in October last year. Time has really flown!

I have come back to this image so many times, tried editing it, and then closed it again. Finally I thought I better try harder and got it to something that looked o.k.

I had troubles for a few reasons. I was in an amazing location, having climbed a very steep boulder and moss covered hillside, that led to a waterfall. the trouble was the hill was so steep, I couldn't include the view and the water, so had to settle for this. The edge of the near grasses and the distant view seemed fused, and i really wanted more separation. The light was perfect, the shot was there, and then the sun disappeared for about 5 hours, as rain and wind battered me. In the end, a little glow of light was left, but I never felt I got the shot I witnessed in front of me. I have pushed the contrast (and therefore colour) to try and inject a bit of life into what was a bit of a flat looking image. The view behind me was of a large lake in a hidden basin between two large hills/mountains. I thought I had reached the top of the hill at this stage, and was pretty dismayed to find endless slippery and wobbly granite boulders, covered in 6 inches of fluffy and wet moss stretching off to yet another mini summit. Realising I had no phone, was on my own, and needed a lot of time to recover my strength, get some shots and get down the other side, I didn't hang about too long.

I have previously posted a shot from the other side looking towards Haukland bay. It was an epic mission that had me crawling on my knees at the end. The distant headland was shrouded in sheets of rain, and that ended up blowing towards me in the end. I made some of my favourite images from the whole trip back on the beach to the left of this shot later that day once I had scrambled down a literally vertical slop in parts on the opposite side. I really should have made better plans than saying to Tony, "I'll catch you on the other side in a couple of hours". Doh..

Thanks for looking.
