Class 52 D1052 Western Viceroy at Westbury.
29th March, 1975. The Western Sunset Tour.
Westbury.
Joined the crush at the end of the platform to photograph D1052 Western Viceroy and, as can be seen, rubbing shoulders in a crowd is never the best place, nor time, to compose a shot.
As was usual at this time multiple Westerns were used for different legs of the tour. D1036 Western Emperor came off the train at this point having brought the tour via Exeter St David's and Yeovil Pen Mill. Viceroy is seen here backing onto the tour to take it forward to Derby via Dr Day's Junction and the former Cheltenham to Stratford-on-Avon line.
D1036 Western Emperor will then be waiting at Bristol TM to take over, once again, and finish the run west via the Taunton freight avoiding line.
The prospective of this shot though makes it look as if D1052 is hauling a stone train. The headcode is for a Manchester - Penzance service!
