Kordofan Giraffe and Spur-winged Geese at Machtour, Zakouma National Park, Chad

There are also a few African Comb Ducks mixed in with the geese.

Zakouma National Park was created in 1963 to protect the endangered Kordofan Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis antiquorum) at the time there were only around 50 left in the park. Now there must be close to 1,400 of these beautiful animals this is 60% of the entire population of these giraffes, making Zakouma their most important stronghold.

Recent genetic evidence has revealed that there in fact four distinct species of giraffes in Africa, Northern, Reticulated, Maasai and Southern, these Kordofan Giraffes are one of three subspecies of the Northern Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis). The other two subspecies are the highly endangered West African Giraffe (G. c. peralta) now restricted to Niger and numbering just 450+ and the Nubian Giraffe (G c. camelopardalis) also endangered which includes the former East African race known as Rothschild's Giraffe.
