Mine clearance by Halo Trust, Reserva do Niassa, Mozambique
Mozambique fought a long war to gain its independence from Portugal in 1975, this was then immediately followed by a brutal 17-year civil war, during these conflicts, landmines were laid all across the country. Causing countless casualties long after the fighting had stopped, preventing farmers from safely working their land, endangering livestock and wildlife. Thanks to the hard work of organisations like the Halo Trust, clearing up these horrendous weapons, just a few years ago Mozambique was declared finally free of landmines, there are now no known mine fields anywhere in the county, a truly remarkable achievement.
