TRI-JET EYE JET

I don't write about civilian aviation all that much, but I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to write an article on Orbis International, an organization that has used a series of ever-more-advanced Flying Eye Hospitals to perform sight-restoring surgery on patients in underdeveloped nations and to train eyecare specialists in those countries on the latest ophthalmic surgical techniques. Though grounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, Orbis never stopped training eye surgeons around the world through their virtual platform, and are now poised to put their newest Flying Eye Hospital, a McDonnell-Douglas MD10, back to work around the world. Pictured is Orbis' second-generation FEH, the second DC-10 ever built and still the lowest-flight hour example of the type on display at the Pima Air and Space Museum.

My Orbis article is featured in the November 2021 issue of Aviation News Magazine: shop.keypublishing.com/issue/View/issue/AN8223/aviation-n...
