The altar of St Mary's Church at the isolated and tiny East Coast, New Zealand town of Tikitiki. Considered the finest Māori church in the country St Mary's was built in 1924 as a memorial to the Māori men from the East Coast Tribe Ngati Porau who fought and died in the First World War. The church is listed as a Category 1 historic place of special historical and cultural significance. The interior features extensive wooden carvings, ornamental lattice work panels, painted Māori motifs on the ceiling and a memorial board listing all soldiers killed. The main stained glass window depicts local men Second Lieutenant Henare Kohere (killed in France 1916) and Captain Pekama Kaa (killed in Belgium 1917) kneeling at the feet of Christ on the Cross.
