Mother and Juvenile Shag
A juvenile Pied Shag (mottled frontage) pestering the mother for food. This juvenile was one of the small chicks I saw on this nest in the middle of May. Three months later the mother is rejecting the juvenile and shortly afterwards the juvenile was in the water diving for food.
Pied Shags (named Karuhiruhi in New Zealand or otherwise known as the Pied Cormorant - Phalacrocorax) nest primarily in autumn when I saw chicks on this nest and again in the coming spring. Nest building is currently underway for spring.
