The Power of a Reflection

I have tried so many times over the years to get closer to the Kererū (Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae or New Zealand Wood Pigeon) always up in the trees, so as to take better quality images. The last three days however I have had a female Kererū sitting right outside my window (the window shows markings from her big body and wings as she comes in to land on a small window ledge).

I have had a wonderful opportunity to get up close to this bird, within a few metres only (inside and outside the house). I tried closing the curtain but the bird just flew around to the side window. I tried gently hosing water in the bird’s direction but it would come straight back. I then contacted Kererū experts in this country and sent images. They advised this was a female and she was thinking her own reflection was another Kererū moving into her territory. I was told to cover the outside of the windows and the bird would soon move on.

This morning the bird was back at first light and I have since covered the outside of the windows. This afternoon the bird is back up in the surrounding trees eating away happily.
