Winter Snacking

An Eastern Rosella feeding on the tree tip fruit of a native Totara tree. The Eastern Rosella is an Australian Parakeet introduced to New Zealand in the early 1900s as a cage bird. Some escaped starting pockets of population. They were introduced to Wellington in the 1960s and a small number of other areas only. They are the most brightly coloured bird seen in this country and larger (the size of a blackbird) than the native Parakeet.
