Photographer's Self - Portrait, Wm. Giles
Self Portrait of an 1860's photographer. Since it bears the backmark of Wm. Giles, West Aurora, Illinois, it must be him. The 1870 census lists William Giles as a photographer in the 3rd Ward, Aurora, Kane County, Illinois. Giles was 33 years old, born in England. His wife "M", was 27, born in Pennsylvania. Their children, Eva, age 3, and William, age 9/12, were born in Illinois. My first thought was that this was a stereo camera, but thanks to Georgie R, I now realize that it is a CDV camera that made four negatives on a single glass plate.
