Ohio - Made Rifle ~ H. Raison
Tiger striped maple halfstock percussion rifle, stamped "MADE BY H. RAISON". Henry Raison made rifles in Jelloway, Brown Township, Knox County, Ohio, circa 1862, and in Wapakoneta, Auglaize County, Ohio, from at least as early as 1870 through 1890.
This rifle is approximately .38 caliber, with the muzzle turned round to use a guide bullet starter. It has six groove rifling.
Henry Raison was born in either France or Belgium (depending on which census you want to believe) in 1833. He sailed from Antwerp, Belgium and arrived in New York in 1846, at the age of 13. He was listed as a blacksmith in Loudonville, Ashland County, Ohio, in the 1860 census. He was living in Brown Township, Knox County, Ohio, when he registered for the draft during the Civil War. The 1870 and 1880 census both list him as a gunsmith in Wapakoneta.
