Cabinet card by F. E. Poister, Kent, Ohio. Mid 1870's. Louis Bethel was born in Ohio in 1860, the son of Joseph Bethel, born in England in 1829, and his wife Clara M., born in New York in 1830. Young Louis appears to be 15 or 16 years old in this photograph. The style of the cabinet card mounting and backmark also suggest this.
The 1880 census lists Louis still living with his parents in Kent, Ohio. His father was a tinsmith & merchant, and Louis was "learning tinsmithing".
