Cabinet Card (of four) By J. L. Kelman, Traveling Photographer

These four cabinet cards have always been together, so are certainly from the same family.

 

Justus L. Kelman was a traveling photographer. His photos can be found in albums from various parts of Illinois. He was born in September of 1857. The 1880 and 1910 censuses indicate that he was born in Sweden. The 1900 and 1930 censuses indicate that he was born in Illinois. His parents did come from Sweden. He is listed in the 1880 census as a printer in Chicago. He married Minnie A. Spath, a native of Whiteside County, Illinois, January 15, 1885, in Chicago. She was born December 6, 1866. They were listed in a boarding house in Roodhouse, Greene County, Illinois, in the 1900 census. He was listed as a photographer. They were back in Chicago in 1910. Kelman had written a book, "The J.L.K. Simplex Style Computer", in 1908. By 1930 they were living in Eustis, Lake County, Florida. He died there in 1938. Minnie died there in 1941.
