More Cabinet Cards By J. L. Kelman ~ Dapper Young Lad

Justus L. Kelman was a traveling photographer. His cabinet cards turn up in albums from many areas in Illinois. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, in September of 1857. He is listed as a printer in Chicago, in the 1880 census. He married Minnie A. Spath, (who was born December 6, 1866, in Whiteside County, Illinois) in Chicago, January 15, 1885. The 1900 census finds them listed in a boarding house in Roodhouse, Greene County, Illinois. He is listed as a photographer.

In 1910 they are back in Chicago, where he is again listed as a printer. He wrote a book in 1908 titled, "The J. L. K. Simplex Type Computer". By 1930, Justus and Minnie were living in Eustis, Lake County, Florida. He died there in 1938, followed by Minnie in 1941.

I tend to think that these last two cabinet cards by Kelman are earlier than the others I have posted. The style of the mounting looks mid-to-late 1880's. The others look 1890's.
