Mystery Photographer - J. L. Kelman

Cabinet card of a young Victorian lady, by J. L. Kelman, Photographer. I have several cabinet cards by J. L. Kelman, from various old photo albums, not all from the same area. I have long suspected that Kelman was a traveling photographer, although he is not listed in Brown's book on that subject.

After doing a more thorough search, using alternate spellings, I believe I have found J. L. Kelman. He is listed in the 1900 census, in a boarding house, in Roodhouse, Greene County, Illinois. He is listed as "J. L. Kelmar", photographer, age 42, born in Illinois. He was born in September of 1857. His wife, Minnie A., age 26, was listed with him in the boarding house. This seems a good fit for a traveling photographer. The albums that had cabinet cards by J. L. Kelman, were from the Princeton and Galva, Illinois areas, which are about forty miles apart, and both a long way from Roodhouse, Greene County.
