Minimum nutrition - bread and water.
A canteen of water and “hardtack” carried by a soldier in the Civil War. Hardtack was a cracker as hard as a rock and was a food staple for the Union soldiers. It is made of flour and water then baked to a hard biscuit. The most common complaint from the soldiers was that it was so hard that they couldn’t bite into them. Soldiers broke them up and put them in water or coffee to soften creating a mush before eating.
Sounds yummy, huh?
