(#18) War Club
The macana war club was a traditional weapon of the Tohono O’odham people used against their enemies. The Tohono O’odham people are a group of Native American Indians who currently reside in the Sonoran Desert of eastern Arizona near Tucson. “Tohono O’odham” means “desert people”.
This club is on display at Tumacácori Mission Museum south of Tucson Arizona. The mission has an interesting past. Tumacácori was established in 1691 by Jesuit padre Eusebio Kino making it the oldest Jesuit mission site in Arizona. In 1848 the mission was abandoned and began falling into severe disrepair. Restoration and stabilization efforts began in 1908 when the site was declared Tumacácori National Monument. Tumacácori National Historical Park consists of 360 acres and protects three separate Spanish mission communities.
