100/53 (#75) Wolf
Dalton Highway was nicknamed the “Haul Road” during the construction of the Alaska Pipeline. It is 415 miles long stretching to the oil fields of Prudhoe Bay and the beginning of the Alaska Pipeline. Most of the traffic on this route is 18-wheeler trucks servicing the oil field at Prudhoe Bay. Average traffic is about 250 vehicles per day. There are only 3 gas stations to service the entire route and 2 are within a few miles of each other. Approximately 75% of the road is gravel with tire puncturing rocks, steep hills and sweeping curves.Truckers on the Dalton have given their own names to its various features, including: The Taps, The Shelf, The Bluffs, Oil Spill hill, Beaver Slide, Two and a Half Mile, Oh Shit Corner and the Roller Coaster.
Driving back from the Arctic Circle on the Dalton Highway we spotted this wolf. Warnings about this route says to avoid the wolves as they can be very aggressive. This one was not the least bit interested in us as we stopped for a few photos.
