Backwater To Bath

47 772 leads Steam Dreams excursion 1Z30, the 06.48 from Shoeburyness to Bath Spa past Dudding Hill Junction in north west London. Steam loco 61306 'Mayflower' was scheduled to take over from the 47 at Southall.

This quiet manually signalled route provides a direct route from the Midland Main Line, Chiltern Main Line and West Coast Main Line to the Great Western Main Line and Southern Region, passing through Neasden South Junction, Acton Canal Wharf and Acton Wells Junction. There can be several hours between trains (the previous train to this was some three hours earlier) and passenger traffic is not at all common. Potentially there are proposals by Transport for London for a west London orbital railway, which will link Hounslow with West Hampstead Thameslink including the construction of four new stations on this current London railway backwater.

Just under half an hour prior to 1Z30 traversing this seldom used piece of railway, it had run on another short stretch of rare track from Junction Road Junction to Carlton Road Junction. That part linking to Gospel Oak to Barking route with the Midland Main Line (MML). When it got it's path onto the MML 1Z30 crossed all four running lines in order to gain access to the 'Hendon Lines' at West Hampstead Thameslink to enable it to pass Dudding Hill.
