Bringing On The Sub
In connection with the 150th anniversary of the London & Greenwich Railway in 1986, a shuttle service was run between London Bridge and Cannon Street station. A display of various diesel and electric traction, as well as steam locomotive No.777 'Sir Lamiel', was on display at Cannon Street, which in those days was closed at the weekend.
Preserved 4-SUB unit 4732, coupled with 2-BIL 2090, were brought back into use for operating the shuttle service. The 6 car formation is seen in platform 2 at London Bridge. Today the scene has totally changed as the whole of London Bridge station has been rebuilt in connection with the Thameslink programme, which stumbled into operation last May.
Although London Bridge station as seen here looked quite modern, the BR uniforms, stencil headcode, tail lamp and screw coupling really date things. But of course this was well over 30 years ago - gulp!
