Carnegie extension
By the late 1960's early 1970's the Carnegie Library building fell into disuse and the City wanted to get rid it. However, after public protest in 1976, the City agreed to convert the old building into a community centre. An extension was added on an adjacent lot that once hosted the original City Hall at a cost of $1.2 million.
The Carnegie Community Centre opened its doors to the public in 1980. Today it serves as an important drug and alcohol free oasis for residents of the Downtown Eastside (DTES).
