Stuttgart

Stuttgart's most charming palace must surely be Schloss Solitude, which was commissioned by Duke Carl Eugen in 1763. It was intended to be a place 'far from the turmoil and disappointments of the world'. Its architect was Philippe de la Guepiere, who was a pioneer of the Louis XVI style in Germany. A straight road runs for 12 km from here to the Residenzschloss in Ludwigsburg. This photograph shows the interior of the Marble Hall, with the ceiling of the Palm Room at the top.
