Karlsruhe
The centrepiece of Karlsruhe is a vast square, at the far end of which is the Baroque Schloss, once the principal residence of the margraves and later grand dukes of Baden. From its tower, no fewer than 32 streets fan out, giving the city the nickname of Facherstadt (Fan City). Built during the first half of the 18th century, it was severely damaged during World War Two, but the exterior has since been reconstructed - though, sadly, not the interior, which now houses the excellent Baden State Museum.
