Jodhpur

Near the town of Mandore, in Greater Jodhpur, is Panch Kunda, the cremation ground of former maharanis (queens) of Jodhpur-Marwar, although a few maharajas were also cremated there. There are, of course, no actual bodies, as it is the Hindu practice to cremate the dead, so the 'tombs' are essentially cenotaphs or memorials. Had it not been for a chance conversation with a resident of Jodhpur I met in a cafe, I would never have found my way to Panch Kunda, as it was not mentioned in my guide book. I was the only person there, apart from my auto-rickshaw driver and the site guard. I believe that the oldest cenotaphs date back to the 15th century; they are mostly in reasonably good condition, despite being infested with feral pigeons.
