Gwalior

The extravagant Jai Vilas Palace was built by the Scindia family, maharajas of Gwalior, during the 1870s. Designed by Sir Michael Filose, several of its wings are now open to the public; the current maharaja, who is also a member of parliament and former government minister, lives - I think - with his family in a more modest adjoining palace. This photograph shows the interior of one of the former royal apartments in the museum wing, the room housing the family's collection of oriental art and artefacts.
