The main mosque in Ahmedabad is the Jama Masjid (Friday Mosque). This photograph is of its huge courtyard, which measures 75 metres by 66. On the left is the main prayer hall, whilst on the right is the ablutions basin. The mosque was commissioned by Ahmed Shah I for his private use and was completed in 1424. The yellow sandstone building incorporates material from demolished Hindu and Jain temples.
