Flint (Flintshire)
Begun in 1277, Flint Castle was the first of a chain of forts built by King Edward I to ensure English dominance over the Welsh. One scene from Shakespeare's 'Richard II' is set here (when he is captured by his cousin Henry Bolingbroke, later King Henry IV). In the mid-17th century, it was partly destroyed on the orders of Oliver Cromwell, and has been a picturesque and mournful ruin ever since. It overlooks the estuary of the River Dee.
