karen joan says: The DC Arts Center (affectionately known as DCAC by her friends) is as bright and artistically aggressive on the inside as it is on the outside. DCAC is a gallery and theater and a whole lot more. Yum!

karen joan says: Located on the 2nd floor of 2438 18th St NW in Washington, DC in Adams Morgan since 1989, it has seen many changes in the DC art scene but has remained consistent in its mission to support the home team - local artists of all kinds - and let artists be artists by giving space, moral support and professional experience to emerging artists and all those that are working with new ideas as well as showcasing underappreciated local artists.

karen joan says: Yearly exhibition 1460 Wall Moutables is a non-juried first-come, first served membership show that happens every summer. A visitor is treated to new art by complete unknowns that want to put themselves out there for the first time. But those in the know will also find work by DC's more established and known local artists who regularly participate in this annual event.

karen joan says: DCAC's daily bread is almost entirely made by its membership contributions and being a part of the "Wall Mountables Experience" is just one of the perks of being a member. Like, did you know, go through the gallery and there is a theater ?!?!?!?!?!!? A venue for live performance of all kinds, from Handke to burlesque, poetry to punk (and a lot of times combinations off all the above and more).

karen joan says: Hanging out between the gallery and theater - look at the happy intermission people. This could be you! Stepping into DCAC's black box theater is a world away from the lobbying, legislating and researching that sometimes seems like the only face of Washington, DC.

karen joan says: The schedule of new and exciting things going on at DCAC is constantly changing, you really do need to become a member to keep on top of it and make best use of the DCAC published newsletter (or find them on fb or twitter and all the jazz). Part of my reason for starting this gallery was that I found this amazing picture of Mind Over Matter Music Over Mind (MOM2) playing live at the DC Arts Center in January of 2009 as part of an experimental music series called the Electric Possible. Seeing documentation of this event made me so sad I missed this series - but so happy that there is a DCAC where self-produced events and other labors of love just like it can happen in DC.

karen joan says: And if I seem a little to be pushing the avant artsy a little too much, know that there are plenty of other kinds of entertaining art going on at the DC Arts Center. As the two thousand aughts come to a close DC's Landless Theatre puts on full feature show after show to sell out crowds.

karen joan says: Here's a shot of some local artist's taking in the scene at the 2008 DCAC fundraiser Cuisine des Artistes that was held at Meridian House. The DC Arts Centers pairs artists with restaurants to create show-stopping environments that feed the mind, the eye and the stomach. Get ready for another Cusine in 2010!

karen joan says: DCAC has also gone beyond the boundaries of its home base on 18th St in Adams Morgan by supporting resident visual arts collective, Sparkplug. Sparkplug is a gathering of Washington, DC metro area emerging artists, curators and writers that meet once a month to discuss their work, explore common concerns and ideas, grow their community, and dream up creative engagements both in DC and around the globe. Here are some pics of the DCAC booth at the one and only artDC, a very short lived DC Art Fair from 2007 where DCAC had a killer booth alongside DC's commercial gallery players.

karen joan says: (Shameless self-promotion.) I was in that first Sparkplug 'show' (called “Chamber Play”) at artDC. This is a lovely detail of one of many balloons from my installation “Silver Overcast”; against the backdrop of the DC Convention Center ceiling. The photo is taken by Jen Foley, whose fantastic series of burlesque photos are featured in the photo right above this one. If you click on this photo to go to its 'home' you get to see this great comment from Flickr's 'only stardust' (some photographer guy based in Berlin) “What does this balloon want to say the naive viewer like me: Get rid of guns? That would be a nice message. Can't such a balloon itself be a symbol for a thousand things? I love photos that make me think a bit - even if it leads to nothing ... ;-)” Well I think 'only stardust' has it right, all art should make you “think a bit.” Nor should it shy away from being about “a thousand things”. In all the years I have been involved with this gallery (17 and counting!) DCAC has been the place that all can come to get a little piece of “a thousand things” and not ever feel naïve.

karen joan says: So if you have always thought that Washington DC's gallery scene was only about colorful spiral art & museumgoers like these.....

karen joan says: ...then perhaps you need to take note and consider the message in this Larry Krone reverse painting on glass artwork from the exhibit "Sloganeers" put on by DCAC as part of the 2008 Curatorial Initiative.
