G-APAS (XM823) DH.106 Comet 1XB

RAF Museum, Cosford, June 1990.

Ex-Air France F-BGNZ. Grounded in 1954 after the BOAC Comet crashes. Converted from Comet 1A when fitted with De Havilland Ghost 50 Mk 4 engines with 5,500 lb static thrust each, strengthened fuselage, rounded windows and other modifications. This was the last such Comet conversion to take place.

On 9 September 2025 the fuselage of this aircraft was transported by road to the South Wales Aviation Musem at St Athan, the machine having been deemed surplus to requirements by the RAFM. Its wings will not be reattached, owing to corrosion which occurred during the decades that it spent outdoors at Cosford. Thus there will no longer be a complete Comet 1 in existence.
