A Useful Tool
In teh strap loop on my Carradice Saddlebag is a stick. I have loved off road cycling since I was a child and rode miles off road before Mountain Bikes were heard of. I used to ride what was calle Rough Stuff before mountain biking, the Rough Stuff fellowship still exists and it was where I learned off road skills. I do not own an ff road bike, all my off road cyclig is done on road bikes like it used to be before teh 80's.
One of the best pieces of advice I got was from a gentleman called George Hunter who showed me how to find a stick of the right size and strength to clear mud from under mudguards. Every time I go off road and it has rained recently I look for a stick like this one and put it on my saddle bag. I uswed thsi stick lots on this ride along a towpath, the mud was like plasticine. I am keeping this stick, it is one of the best I have found for this job.
I have tried out mountain bikes from time to time to see how I find them as they develop. I still prefer using a road bike, I find a road bike light, nimble and fine in most off road situations.
