Manchester Central Station

The superb Manchester Central station was opened by the Cheshire Lines Comittee in 1880 and had a similar overall roof to St. Pancras. After closure in May 1969 and under threat of demolition, it was used as an NCP car park for several years until 1981 when work started on its conversion to G-MEX (Greater Manchester Exhibition Centre). These photos were taken in October 1980, when the front still proclaimed the name Central Station but it had become a rather decrepit albeit still magnificent structure.
