Huon Pine Slabs

In addition to miners, there were "piners," those that harvested Huon Pine from deep within the temperate rainforest. The trees live long, grow slowly, and were amazing for ship building as they resist rot. Harvesting is no longer allowed; this lumber is the result of found logs that were submerged for decades in the rivers or harbors. At this size, the tree would have been one or two thousand years old. These slabs sold for $5500 each.
