Gulmarg to Tangmarg - A Journey
The Himalayan resort of Gulmarg (2,650 m) is situated in the Pirpanjal range in the western Himalayas, in the Baramula district of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.
The town is connected to state capital, Srinagar by road via Tangmarg (1,577 m). The 12-km road goes downhill to Tangmarg passing through forests of pine and fir.
This hill station was first ‘discovered’ as a resort town by the 16th-century Kashmiri ruler who was so impressed with the flower-carpeted meadow that he named it Gulmarg, or ‘meadow of flowers’.
While Gulmarg is an all-weather resort with refreshing summer meadows and pastoral scenes, the main reason to come here, in winter, is the long-run skiing and snowboarding. According to CNN, Gulmarg is the 'heartland of winter sports in India' and was rated as Asia's seventh best ski destination.
